How to get there: We took a public bus from central Youyang County 酉阳县 and got off a little less than 2 hours later at an intersection 8 km from the scenic area. Other passengers and the driver helped us to find the right bus stop.
After we got off the bus we started to walk the 8 kilometers down to Apeng River and Shengui Gorge. It’s a good asphalt road with almost no traffic and no crossroads, the road ends at the visitor center by the river and doesn’t lead anywhere else.
It’s a nice walk, but after a while a car on the way to the visitor center drove past and offered us to hitchhike. Later in the day they also drove us back the 8 kilometers up to the bus stop.

The port besides the visitor center. The other side of the river belongs to Qianjiang district in Chongqing 黔江区, they have their own sightseeing boats, and it’s possible to get there by car from Qianjiang.

The boat trip lasted 90 minutes. First 30/40 minutes to a mountain inhabited by monkeys, a 20 minutes stop, and then the same way back again.
A hermit has been living in this cave for 30 years:
After 30-40 minutes the boat stops here for a while, and then returns the same way back to the visitor center. A lot of monkeys live on the mountain slopes in this area.
