Location: Guizhou Province, Tongren City, Bijiang district / Songtao County
贵州省 铜仁市 碧江区 / 松桃苗族自治县
Time of visit: October 2019
Official website in Chinese: http://www.gzfjs.gov.cn/2013/1127/ziran1019.html
How to get there: half an hour by car from Tongren City to Tianshengqiao scenic area, and one hour to Tongren Grand Canyon scenic area.
Tianshengqiao is just 20 minutes away from Tongren Fenghuang Airport 铜仁凤凰机场
Tongren Grand Canyon is the northern end, and Tianshengqiao scenic area is the southern end of the same canyon. It takes around 30 minutes by car between the two entrances.
Most tourists only visit Tianshengqiao. Stairs lead down from the entrance all the way to a river where boats are waiting. The boat trip takes one hour and ends a couple of kilometers from the entrance. It’s worth walking back to the entrance (half an hour), there are not too many cars on the road. But there are also sightseeing buses available.
It’s not possible to cross the canyon from Tianshengqiao to Tongren Grand Canyon, but after the boat trip we found out that it’s possible to follow a winding road over the mountain all the way to the Tongren Grand Canyon entrance, it takes a couple of hours. See maps further down on this page.
Unfortunately we didn’t know about this road in advance, so we didn’t have time to follow it all the way, we just hiked a couple of kilometers and then returned to the entrance. The weather was too bad anyway.
The scenery was very nice (see photos below), so it’s probably well worth trekking to Tongren Grand Canyon. It has officially been closed for a couple of years, but we were told that it’s often possible to enter the Tongren Grand Canyon scenic area anyway.

The boat trip ends here, the stairs lead up to a road:
The stairs end beside this road, 30 minutes by foot (or 5 minutes by bus) in one direction to Tianshengqiao entrance, and a long hike (maybe 3 hours) over the mountain to Tongren Grand Canyon in the other direction.
Finally 4 photos from the beginning of the road from Tianshengqiao to Tongren Grand Canyon (it was late in the afternoon, we didn’t have time to trek all the way):
