We stayed in Linzhou 林州 and made a daytrip to Hongdouxia, but there is a hotel besides the Hongdouxia ticket office: Red Bean Hotel
We spent half a day here, and we were almost alone all the time. It was early November and pleasant weather, but we only met a couple of tourists. It was fantastic to have the place for ourselves.
Open battery buses run between the entrance and the top area, it’s just a 5-10 minutes ride and it’s a very beautiful road. Avoid the shuttle buses and walk up instead, it’s a very nice 30+ minutes hike. There are no people or vehicles on the road.
At the top you have to walk through a long and narrow tunnel for 10 minutes, and then long stairs take you down along the steep sides of the mountain. The views are excellent.
The main path is not very long, and most visitors just spend 1-2 hours in Hongdouxia. Instead of leaving the gorge we went back up the road half way to the top where a hiking path starts (see the detailed Hongdouxia map below). It’s ignored by most visitors, but it’s a nice 60+ minutes walk, uphill for half an hour and then down on the other side of the hill. No exceptional panoramas though.
There’s also a toboggan run if you don’t want to walk down the stairs.
The start and end points are not far from each other, maybe a 10 minutes walk along the road.
